"How We Help Children" (For Parents and Professionals)

Helping your Child Navigate Loss

Children and Young People

We are a charitable organisation offering voluntary support to children and young people suffering from grief, loss as a result of death.

Supporting a Grieving Child

When a death occurs, your first instinct is to protect your child. However, children are often more aware of the situation than we realize. They process grief differently than adults, often moving in and out of intense emotions very quickly.

At Bereavement Care, we help you understand these behaviours and provide the specialist support your child needs to express their feelings safely

Our Scope

Many children in the UK, between the ages of 5-18 years have experienced the effects of grief, it might be through the death of a parent ,sibling, close relative or family friend. Grief is a natural process and each person their own path in their own time.

"We provide a safe, confidential space for children to process loss at their own pace."

The Service we Provide

Our services extends beyond children and families we also support children and young people in schools.

We offer free, online and face to face individual and school based grief support to children, young people, families and schools.

Our Specialist Children’s Services

We offer a dedicated Free Children’s Visiting Scheme across  Harrow and Hillingdon]. Our support is tailored to the child's developmental age and unique personality.

  • One-to-One Support: Trained volunteers visit children in their own environment—usually at home or in school—where they feel most secure.
  • Creative Expression: We use play, art, and storytelling to help younger children communicate feelings they may not have the words for yet.
  • Adolescent Support: For teenagers, we provide a confidential space to talk about the complexities of loss, identity, and the future.
  • School Liaison: We can work alongside your child’s school to ensure they are supported during the school day.
  • We help regardless who has died. We focus on using languages suitable for the children's age to discuss death sensitively and clearly.

Partnering with Educators and Health Professionals

Information for Professionals & Schools

A death in the family can significantly impact a child’s attendance, behavior, and academic performance. We work closely with schools, GPs, and social services to provide a "wrap-around" care approach.

  • Referral Process: We accept referrals from parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals (with parental consent).
  • Training & Consultation: We offer advice to school staff on how to manage bereavement within the classroom and how to support a grieving pupil.
  • Resources: We can recommend books and tools specifically designed for educational settings.

We emphasise inclusivity with accommodations for disabilitiesand diverse language needs.
